Controversial and missed referee calls in the opening matches of this year’s Rugby World Cup have led World Rugby to make the unusual move of calling out their officials for their performances.
World Rugby issued a “statement of clarification” in which they said they wanted more from their officials in Japan.
The statement says following the usual review of matches, the match officials team recognize that performances over the opening weekend of Rugby World Cup 2019 were not consistently of the standards set by World Rugby and themselves, but World Rugby is confident of the highest standards of officiating moving forward.
