The University of the South Pacific Lautoka Campus held a very successful blood drive last weekend that set a new record for units of blood collected.
Fifty six pints of blood, that could potentially save up to 168 lives, was collected at the Campus’ fifth blood drive held at the Sugar City Mall on Saturday, 27th April.
The organisers of the blood drive were very impressed with the response from donors who turned up despite two blood drives, organized by other organizations, held in Lautoka consecutively over the last two weeks.
The blood drive saw a large number of people coming forward to donate their blood, for a worthy cause, despite the wet weather conditions. The Campus Blood Drive organizing Chairperson, Dennis Sen, said the response from the public was very encouraging.
“This drive made the highest ever blood collection since the inception of the campaign in November 2011,” said Mr Sen.
“I believe people are becoming more aware of the campaign and realize the importance of donating blood,” he added.
Mr Sen said the Campus will continue with its campaign efforts and he has hopes to organize another blood drive in the next three months.
USP Lautoka Campus Director, Dr Pramila Devi, said she was impressed with the interest shown by people in donating blood.
She said this campaign reinforces the University’s commitment to the regional and community engagement which is part of its Strategic Plan.
