THE UNIVERSITY OF FIJI, SAWENI, 16 May 2014. The Girmit Divas Celebration Committee led by Mrs. Suklesh Bali organised the Girmit Divas at the University of Fiji Saweni Campus on 16 May 2014.
The University of Fiji during the celebrations took a new initiative of recognising descendants of Girmitiyas for outstanding contributions to Fiji in their respective field of work and engagement. This initiative is the first for The University of Fiji and according to Mrs. Bali this was to become an annual event hereafter.
Those awarded the Certificate of Recognition on 16 May 2014 at the Hands of the Indian High Commissioner Mr. Vinod Kumar were – Mr. Y P Reddy of Reddy Group for outstanding contribution to Fiji in the field of Tourism, Pandit Bhuwan Dutt for outstanding contributions to Fiji in the field of Public Service, Prof. Rajesh Chandra of USP for outstanding contributions to Fiji in the field of Higher Education, Mr. Brij Dayal and Mr. Prakash Dayal of Dayal Group of Companies for outstanding contributions to Fiji in the field of Commerce and Industry and Ambassador Pandit Kamlesh Arya of Arya Samaj for outstanding contributions to Fiji in the field of Education.
The Recipients contributions to other significant areas of engagement were also acknowledged.
