With the start of another school year just a day away, the Fiji Police Force would like to request parents and guardians to spend some quality time with their children going over safety tips.
Some of our children will be starting school for the first time and tips such as road safety and who they can turn to for assistance in times of need must be addressed now. Younger children often have limited experience with traffic and lack the skills to negotiate traffic safely.
On the same note we are also requesting motorists to be extra vigilant and take special care while driving. Children often are caught up in whatever they are doing and do not always notice oncoming traffic especially near schools, which is why we are pleading with drivers to drive slowly in school zones and be prepared to stop at all times.
Traffic officers will also be out in numbers and will be monitoring issues such as overloading of buses and unsafe road behaviour as our roads are expected to be very busy with the usual back to school early morning traffic congestion.
Other issues that should be addressed include before and after school safety where parents and guardians must talk to their children about the importance of not deviating to other places when they are supposed to be in school as it can lead to them doing things that could get them in trouble.
We wish students all the best for the 2015 school year.
