Over €3 million to improve water and sanitation in Kiribati

The European Union has approved €3.3 million (AUD 4.75m) to support Kiribati’s efforts to increase its access to safe water and sanitation in the islands.

The financing agreement between the European Union and the Government of Kiribati, was signed in Suva on 1 August, 2014. The funding will be used for the second phase of the “Kiribati Water and Sanitation for Outer Islands” (KIRIWATSAN) project.The first phase of the € 3.4 million project began in June 2011 and will run until April 2016.

The second phase of the project is being implemented in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, and will focus on improving water and sanitation infrastructure in 35 villages and 16 islands of Kiribati’s Gilbert group. In addition, the project will enhance sustainable water and sanitation governance practices at the community level and run intensive training and awareness campaigns.
