- FIJI STRENGTHENS TIES WITH KOREAN AIR
The Republic of Korea’s flag carrier and national airline Korean Air is committed to assist in promoting Fiji as a friendly destination.
In a meeting with Fiji’s Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Korea His Excellency Filimone Kau, Korean Air President Mr. Chi Chang – Hoon expressed the airline’s commitment to working with Fiji to attract more visitors to the country.
Aside from the traditional Asian and European visitors who use Korean Air, the airline is exploring ways of bringing in new visitors from places like Russia, China, Mongolia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Ambassador Kau in response said Fiji will be more than happy to assist Korean Air in its effort to expand its market base and attract more tourists to Fiji.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji, I would like to express to you our most sincere appreciation of the excellent service that Korean Air provides to the Fijian people and visitors to Fiji.”
He added the Fijian Government was grateful that despite the challenging business environment, Korean Air was still committed to servicing the Nadi to Incheon route.
The meeting also discussed the possibility of further cooperation between Korean Air and the Fiji Government particularly in the area of tourism infrastructure.
Another area that was discussed was health tourism as most Asian tourists preferred an Asian style of health hospitality.
“We want to invite Korean Air to expand in whatever way it can, particularly in its services and business investments in Fiji,” Ambassador Kau said.
President Chi reassured Ambassador Kau that Korean Air remains committed to Fiji as Nadi is the main transit point for most Pacific Islanders.
“It’s been challenging over the years but we remain committed and continue to service three weekly flights.”
President Chi has assigned his Chief Marketing Officer to hold further discussions and formulate a way forward that will enhance Korean Air services to Fiji.
Korean Air has been servicing Fiji for 19years since its first flight from Incheon to Nadi in 1995.

- HIGH POTENTIAL FOR KOREAN COMPANIES
There is high potential for Korean small and medium companies to operate in Fiji.
These were the comments by Fiji’s Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Korea His Excellency Filimone Kau following a meeting with Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business (KBiz) Chairman Mr. Kim Ki-Moon.
Ambassador Kau met with Chairman Kim to seek information on the role of the Federation in Korea particularly in how it operates small and medium businesses in Korea.
The meeting also discussed possible areas of investment in the infrastructural sector.
According to Ambassador Kau, Korean companies currently operating in Fiji held a proven track record and were highly recommended.
He said Government was exploring the possibility of hiring Korean companies to conduct major projects in Fiji and sought the recommendation of Chairman Kim on the subject.
The small and medium business of the Republic of Korea is considered the root of its economy and accounts for 99% of the number of enterprises and 88% of the number of employees, therefore playing a pivotal role in the ROK’s national economy.
Until now, the ROK’s SMEs continuously improves its competitiveness and cultivates overseas markets through endless technology development and management innovation.
As a result, it has established the foundation to develop into the world’s ninth trading nation with trading volume of US$1trillion.
The Kbiz was established in 1962 under the objective to improve the economic status and support equal opportunities for Korean SMEs.
KBiz has actively dealt with the rapidly changing global economy through making proposals on governmental policies and seeking various systems, while also providing support that aims to enhance the competitiveness of SMEs.
