Miley Cyrus often tweeted about her recent hospitalization, but on Monday, the “Adore You” singer spoke about it for the first time when she phoned in for an On Air With Ryan Seacrest radio interview.
“I’m doing good,” the 21-year-old pop star told Ryan Seacrest and Ellen K. “I’m much better—happy to be on the phone with you guys, happy to be getting back on the road. You have no idea.”
Cyrus then recalled being forced to cancel her concert in North Carolina due to illness. After spending the night in the hospital, doctors agreed to let her leave and resume her Bangerz tour.
Unfortunately, the singer fell ill again and was admitted to the hospital a second time. “I was on this medicine for five days—everything was all good—and on the sixth day, I just woke up and it was so scary,” Cyrus recalled.
“When you’re allergic to something, you’re basically poisoning yourself, so I had just basically been poisoning myself with something I didn’t know I was really scary allergic to. It was so scary.”
“It was insane. I was begging the doctors, ‘Let me out to go do the show!’ It was basically, ‘No way.'” Cyrus eventually postponed her U.S. tour.
“I never thought I was going to get stuck in there for as long as I did,” Cyrus admitted. “I thought it was going to be a night and I was in there five or six days.” Time passed slowly, she added.
“I was crying because I was so bored. I’m laying here hooked to all these machines. Every two hours, some woman comes in and pokes me with a needle, just miserable. There’s nothing to do. I tweeted about not having Apple TV. I was like, ‘I’m just laying here with nothing to do.’ My sister went and got me a bunch of DVDs.She bought me Clueless and The Shining.
They were both Blu-Ray, and of course they don’t have that at the hospital, either. So I couldn’t watch that. I ended up doing way too much online shopping, and whatever they had me on to make me not in pain, I made some very questionable choices on what I bought. I don’t know what this hot pink mini-skirt is that I bought in the hospital.”
There’s a chance Cyrus could have another allergic reaction, but for now, she’s healthy.
“It can come back within those 27 days, but I’ve been really good,” she said. “I just have to now be more careful and I’m trying to figure out how I can get a fashionable yet good ID bracelet so I can actually have something that says I am allergic to this medicine, because I can never get anything like this again.”
Cyrus didn’t lose weight during her hospital stay. In fact, she put on a few pounds! “I was stuck in Kansas when I was in the hospital, so I wouldn’t eat anything—because the medicine made me sick—except Cracker Barrel.
So all I did for five days was be on steroids to get myself better and eat Cracker Barrel,” she said, laughing. “The best part about being in the hospital or being sick is my mom turned into my everything and basically, I just made her do whatever I wanted for two weeks. It’s like having an assistant.
I had my mom doing everything for me and ordering any kind of food I wanted and bringing me ice cream.”
“You know, most people when they’re sick, they can’t even eat. I’m not that person. I can always eat.”
Cyrus also shut down haters who claimed her hospitalization was an excuse to “play hooky.” The singer said, “You know how hyper I am. There is no part of me that wants to lay in bed and not be on stage.”
The former Hannah Montana star is excited to take her Bangerz tour to Europe and to complete the remaining U.S. dates this summer. “The only good part about this whole thing is I feel like I get to go on another tour, which I’m really excited about,” she said of the rescheduled shows, slated for August.
