His Majesty, the King of Tonga, King Tupou VI visits Laucala Campus

The 20th USP Chancellor, His Majesty King Tupou VI of Tonga and Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’umade a historic tour of the University of the South Pacific Laucala Campus on Thursday 5 September, 2013.

In his first official visit as USP Chancellor, His Majesty toured the campus on Thursday morning, meeting with key senior staff and sections of USP.

Their Majesties were welcomed by USP Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Rajesh Chandra, and Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council, Mr Ikbal Jannif.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University was honoured to have His Majesty visit the campus and noted that the University staff were equally honoured to be part of His Majesty’s tour.

After meeting with the USPPro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, His Majesty met with members of the USP Senior Management team (SMT) and viewed historical photographs of the University.

His Majesty toured the Statham and Lower Laucala campuses, as well as the College of Foundation Studies, and the three Faculties: Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE), Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) and Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE).

Their Majesties also visited the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies (OCACPS), the Book Centre and the Residential Halls.

The final stop of the tour was the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre where His Majesty was taken on a tour by USP’s Director ITS and member of Fiji’s Tongan Community, Mr Kisione Finau.

His Majesty will be officiating in his capacity as Chancellor at the 2013 September graduation ceremony which will be held tomorrow, Friday, 6 September, at the Vodafone Arena.
