Hindus have applauded Malta for reportedly rescuing 291 migrants from a drifting boat.
Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, while praising Malta for the rescue, urged European Union to assist its smallest member Malta in handling migrants and share the burden and resources as accommodating large number of unexpected arrivals could become challenging and overwhelming.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that religion told us to help the helpless. Malta and the world should be more kind to migrants and refugees, who might be fleeing persecution and discrimination, as we were all equal in the eyes of God. Moreover, morality dictated us to provide hope to the uprooted people and ancient scripture Isha Upanishad told us that Lord was enshrined in the hearts of all, Zed added.
Rajan Zed urged His Holiness Pope Francis to advice Malta, said to be 98% Catholic, to be more welcoming of the migrants. Pope should extend his trip of Lampedusa (Italy) on July eight to Malta also to greet the immigrants, Zed stated.
