The Board of Visitors of the Golden Age Home in Lautoka, together with the residents and staff hosted a small thanks giving function at the home on Tuesday, October 8 to thank their queen contestant, supporters and well-wishers.
The home participated in a week long Sugar Festival and sponsored a 21 year old Miss Shiwangani Karishma to represent the home as Miss Golden Age Home.
Miss Karishma has been volunteering her services as a physiotherapist at the home for the past 10 months.
In his opening address the Deputy Chairman of the board, Mr. Arvind Sewram said “The idea behind us participating in the Sugar Festival was to create greater awareness about the home and its residents to the General Public and also to connect our residents to the civil society and I can proudly say that we have achieved that”.
Miss Golden Age Home was crowned first runner up in the Charity Category.
In her thank you speech Shiwangani mentioned “Today I stand here feeling blessed to have been able to do something for them (residents).”
“Through the blessings of god I wore at least 1 crown. I was overwhelmed by the happiness on their faces together with tears of joy, when I walked in the wards at the home with the crown on my head on Sunday just after the crowing night. This was a very emotional moment for me and will remain the most memorable experience of my life”
Meanwhile, the Home raised charity funds amounting to $2500.00. The Sugar Festival Association presented a cheque of $1250.00 to the Board as agreed initially that 50% of the proceeds raised through the charity will be given back to home.
