Cook Islands will host the fourth Climate Action Pacific Partnership (CAPP IV) conference in Rarotonga next year.
Cook Islands Prime Minister Hon. Henry Puna said they were happy to be the 2020 host for the Pacific Climate Change conference. The announcement was made during the Pacific heads meeting along the margins of the third CAPP conference which ended in Suva this afternoon.
Prime Minister Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama said it was decided at the meeting that Cook Islands would carry the Pacific-wide legacy as the conference host next year. He congratulated Prime Minister Puna and assured Fiji’s support towards next year’s conference.
“Let us keep doing the work we know must be done and let’s continue to forge global solutions driven by Pacific energy, commitment and effort,” Hon. Bainimarama said.
Prime Minister Puna said they were looking forward to hosting the Pacific heads and their delegation for yet another robust and climate action conference next year. “I concur with the Fijian Prime Minister when he stated last night that Pacific leaders must come together to create one of the most powerful engines for climate action,” he said.
“Cook Islands is among Pacific countries affected by climate change. We are also serious about our actions against these climate issues. “We urgently need action because we understand better the climate situation we encounter daily.
“Together, as a Pacific family, we can continue our talanoa dialogue and come up with possible solutions to help fight against climate change.”
Hon. Puna added that this year’s conference was well-organised and it encouraged Pacific leaders to seriously look into working hand in hand against climate change.
He also thanked Prime Minister Bainimarama for hosting an international-level conference this year.
