CLOSURE OF INDIAN CULTURAL SUB-CENTRE IN LAUTOKA

The Indian Cultural Sub-Centre operating from the premises of the Girmit Centre Lautoka, has been closed down by the High Commission of India, Suva, with effect from 31 March 2014.

However, the Girmit Council, Lautoka, will continue cultural activities, including music and dance classes, which were hitherto undertaken by the Indian Cultural Sub-Centre.

ICC Sub-Centre Lautoka at a function on 29 March awarded Certificates to 120 students who had successfully completed their instructions in Indian dance and music this year.  The function was attended by Mr Kanti Punja, Vice-President of Girmit Council and Mr  Jone Nakauvadra, Chief Executive Officer of Lautoka City Council, among others.

High Commissioner appreciated the efforts of the ICC Sub-Centre teachers in teaching and promoting dance and music, and thanked the Government of Fiji, the Girmt Council, and Lautoka City Council for their support.

He especially appreciated the offer of the Girmit Council to continue the classes and announced that the musical instruments of the Sub-Centre were being gifted to the Girmit Council.

The High Commission hopes that the people of Lautoka will continue their interest in learning dance and music and in other cultural activities, and support the efforts of the Girmit Council.
