Due to an increased demand from the Western Division, Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (USP) launched its first Chinese language course on 8th April at USP Lautoka Campus.

Using this opportunity, a range of individuals from greater Lautoka took advantage of being the first cohort for the evening Beginners Course. This included individuals from the local Chinese community, professionals such as lawyers, students and business community.
Speaking at the function, Confucius Institute at USP Director, Professor Denggui Li, said this program would help build a stronger relationship between China and Fiji.
He said he was pleased to bring the course to the Lautoka Campus and hoped it would be as successful here as it is in Laucala Campus.
Professor Li also announced that this course could present opportunities to successful students, recommended by the Institute, to travel to China on scholarship, for further training.
USP Lautoka Campus Director Dr Pramila Devi, in her welcome address, thanked Professor Li for bringing the Chinese Language courses to the Western Division.

“Lautoka Campus appreciates this move and is proud to be the first regional campus to offer Chinese language courses,” said Dr Devi.“We are very excited about Chinese language offering in Lautoka and a cohort of USP Lautoka staff is also starting the Beginners Course.”

The function was attended by the first cohort for the Beginners Course, some respected members of the Chinese Community in Lautoka and staff of the USP Lautoka Campus.
