Rugby Canada’s Women’s 7s team have been announced as the latest International team set to contest the 2014 Fitness First Central Coast Sevens in the Women’s Kinesio Cup Division.
Canada currently ranked third on the International World Series are one of the strongest women’s teams in world rugby and will provide formidable opponents in the October tournament joining the likes of
Australia, Fiji and Brazil ranked 2nd, 8th and 11th respectively in the world series with one round left to play.
The international sides will be the top 4 seeded teams for the Central Coast tournament widely regarded as the premier women’s sevens tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tournament Director Craig Morgan stated “the strength of the tournament has attracted the standard of teams we are now seeing, the inclusion of the international teams gives all teams a target to aspire to and make their mark against what will be more fancied opponents, however the beauty and nature of sevens dictates that upsets are always possible and the internationals certainly will not have it all their own way with teams wanting to step up against higher ranked teams”.
The four international sides will join domestic and other internationally based teams including squads from Japan, New Zealand and the USA in what is shaping as an explosive and highly entertaining spectacle.
The game of sevens is enjoying a massive rise in popularity as it heads toward featuring at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The lure of a Gold Medal has generated significant growth in the game with sevens reportedly the fastest growing team sport in the world, coupled with the games highly entertaining and fast nature sevens is expected to enjoy a continuing rise in popularity within the sporting world.
