Fiji Sevens coach Ben Ryan says that Team Fiji has finally overcome most of the hurdles that had hampered his work in the past twelve months, after first raising the bar in Dubai during Fiji’s first ever win in the Desert of the Emirates after 14 long years.

Ryan was speaking to international and local media at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Dubai today at a Media conference organized by Emirates Groups Service and Dnata.

“We had initially set our target on the 100 meters thinking that we will pip everyone else at the post, but occasionally things got throw in our way and this had slowed us down, but the six past weeks have been very good, we actually had some solid training which has been sporadically broken down by the amount of rugby played by the boys on the islands, so there has been some significant tournaments at home including some 15 aside games as well, which the boys have been exposed to”, Coach Ryan said.

Coach Ryan said that Team Fiji had an advantage over other teams in this year’s tournament, as they had been exposed to high intensity rugby in the islands which had enabled them to prepare better as compared to the Gold Coast tournament.

He added that Team Fiji was ready to defend the prestigious title despite the fact that Fiji has never won two years in a row at any international tournament, adding that the boys were ready for the battle on-field, especially with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama showing his support by being present at this weekend’s important Cup defence.

“Our Prime Minister is here and his presence has really boosted the boys confidence, one which I believe that the boys would want to reciprocate by making a double victory in Dubai this weekend” Coach Ryan concluded.
