National Fire Authority (NFA) is reiterating its advice for the members of the community to take fire safety seriously at their homes.
While speaking to the Leadership Fiji participants during their visit to the Suva Fire Station yesterday, NFA CEO John O’Connor, said fire safety is very important and it is everyone’s responsibility.
Mr O’Connor during his message to the participants of the Leadership Fiji, said that fire safety should be followed and practiced at home and in every workplace.
“Members of the community must ensure they discuss and practice fire safety with their families.
“So far, NFA has responded to forty-six structural fires which is of a great concern,” Mr O’Connor said.
“Fire safety is the worst disaster that can strike us but it can be prevented and it is important that everyone take fire safety seriously to minimize the likelihood of fires taking place fire at home and in the workplace.
While, thanking the Leadership Fiji participants for visiting the NFA Suva Fire Station, the NFA CEO said that the visit by the Leadership Fiji was very timely and a good platform for the delivery of NFA’s fire safety messages to the communities, business and more importantly to their individual homes.
NFA encouraged the group to be advocates of the fire safety messages to their staff, families, workmates and friends.
In recognition of the risks and the serious consequences of a fire at home, Mr O’Connor is urging the stakeholders, organizations and community leaders to implement fire risk mitigation strategies to minimize the risk of fires occurring at home and in their businesses.
“Good management of fire safety is essential to ensure that fires do not occur and if they do occur, mitigation strategies should include actions to take to ensure the fire is controlled and contained quickly, effectively and safely.
He also highlighted that home fire evacuation plans must be developed and discussed with family members to ensure everyone is aware of what to do in case of a fire at home.
