Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island, Fiji announces the worldwide release of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) video that features the resort. Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa was one of six Shangri-La properties selected for the project from Shangri-La’s portfolio of 78 hotels and resorts.
The 9-minute video “The Totems of Fiji”, was filmed in 2012 in a documentary style and focuses on biodiversity and conservation, as well as community projects undertaken by the Resort.
The first two videos released were from Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa. The videos are aimed at promoting a greater awareness of CSR highlighting the involvement of both guests and staff in CSR activities.
“We are extremely fortunate that the company selected our Resort to feature in one of these videos and it is a testament to the work that has been carried out in Fiji for more than 10 years,” said Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa General Manager, Michael Monks. “We are also proud of the acknowledgement of the CSR work that has been carried out here long before social responsibility became fashionable in the corporate world and this video speaks more to that and the ongoing challenges we face in an increasingly industrialised world.”
Service Manager for Marine Sanctuary Mereoni Mataika said that the video was unique in it focused solely on CSR issues rather than the Resort as a product.
“This film represents the voice of a Pacific Islander, in this case a Fijian and it talks about the intangible connection we have with nature. “The video also addresses the importance of looking after nature and while it looks at the beauty of nature it also depicts the degradation of the environment so it is not your usual video with pretty tourist spots.
“Having said this, we also focus on hope that young people who are informed will take on the mantle of responsibility in being good stewards of the environment as future leaders.”
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts remains committed to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner while balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders. In striving to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, a corporate-level CSR Committee drives the company’s initiatives in the strategic areas of stakeholder relations, the environment, health and safety, the supply chain and employees. Under the umbrella of “sustainability,” Shangri-La’s social responsibility programme consists of the two elements of “embrace” and “sanctuary.” “Embrace” focuses on Shangri-La’s Caring People Project, which aims to promote the highest level of education and health support in underprivileged communities.
In “sanctuary,” the programme concentrates on Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project, which promotes the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. For more information, please access the CSR section on www.shangri-la.com.
