Friday05 April 2013 – Digicel Fiji is delighted and congratulates Digicel Ba Football on their performance in the O-league competition beating Hekari United of Papua New Guinea 3-1 and drawing 2-2 against the Solomon Islands Warriors.
Digicel Fiji is mindful of its considerable Corporate Social Responsibilities as a good corporate citizen in Fiji and in good faith agreed to assist a Fijian team participating in the international arena to further develop sports in the country. Digicel Fiji felt that its $50,000 cash sponsorship boosted the preparation of the team when no other sponsorship was forthcoming.
Digicel Fiji is also mindful of a press statement released by Fiji Football Association informing media that Fiji FA has decided that the Ba Football Association is not permitted to use Digicel as a naming right sponsor for the district during the Oceania Champions League.
During initial negotiations, Ba Football Club sought clarification from Fiji FA if BA FC could take Digicel’s assistance to prepare for the O-league championship. BA Football club received confirmation from the President of Fiji FA, Mr. Rajesh Patel that as long as the sponsorship was for O-league only, Fiji FA did not have any objections. Ba Football Club also received a letter from the Chief Executive Officer, M r. Bob Kumar stating “that Fiji FA has no objection to 4R BA team being sponsored by Digicel as long as it is strictly confined to the OFC Champions League only”.
Digicel Fiji CEO, Mr. Maurice McCarthy states that “Digicel is delighted with Digicel Ba FC’s performance in the O-league competition beating Hekari United of Papua New Guinea 3-1 and drawing 2-2 against the Solomon Islands Warriors. Fijians should be proud of a local football club doing so well in the Oceania region and rally behind the Ba Football club”.
Mr. McCarthy also stated that Digicel Fiji will engage with Ba Football Club and Fiji FA to seek clarification as to why the decision to allow Digicel to sponsor Ba Football club was reversed. Digicel Fiji looks forward to a long and successful partnership with the BA Football Club.
