Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has sent a letter of condolence to the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil Her Excellency Madam Dilma Vana Rousseff on the recent fire in Brazil that claimed more than 230 lives.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, I express my deepest condolences regarding the tragic fire that occurred in the nightclub in Santa Maria early Sunday morning that claimed over 230 innocent young lives. It is with great sadness that I send you this message as the New Year has just begun and many of these young victims were probably just looking forward to another year of studies and personal development and other planned activities”.

Through a diplomatic note issued from Fiji’s Foreign Ministry and Fiji’s embassy in Brasilia, Prime Minister Bainimarama reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment and support towards the government and people of Brazil during this period.

“We convey our wishes for a quick recovery to those who were injured and my Government is ready to provide you and your people with whatever assistance that may be required”.

“Madam President, at this difficult time, our thoughts over those who passed away weigh heavily in our hearts in Fiji and our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the families of the victims and all the Brazilian people”.

According to international media reports, Brazilian authorities have cited the use of fireworks as the main cause of fire in the nightclub in Santa Maria, a University city located in the South of  Brazil.

Brazil is now marking a 3-day mourning period for those that lost their lives.
