At 3pm today, Tropical Depression 02F was located near 12.1 degree South latitude and 177.4 degree East longitude or about 60km northeast of Rotuma and about 630km North of Nadi.
It has a central pressure of 1002hPa and it is currently slow moving. The models are capturing the system and have moderate to high probability of developing into a Tropical cyclone in the next 24-48 hours. The associated trough with the depression is expected to gradually move south from tomorrow.
Even though the trough is expected to move south tomorrow, the associated rain bands have started to affect the group and is likely to become more frequent. In anticipation of the trough moving over the group, a heavy rain alert is now in force for Eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau, Lomaiviti and Yasawa group.
For Fiji: Occasional rain, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms is expected over most places. Rain will be becoming frequent and heavy from tomorrow.
For Rotuma: Rain bands and strong winds associated with the trough are expected to continue affecting Rotuma. A strong wind warning remains in force for Rotuma land and waters.
A strong wind warning is currently in force for land areas of Rotuma, Lau, Lomaiviti, Yasawa and Mamanuca group, Vanua Levu, Eastern half of Viti Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands.
These areas can expect strong east to southeast winds with average speeds of 40km/hr to 50 km/hr and gusts to 65km/hr.
A strong wind warning is also in force for ALL Fiji waters.
Mariners should expect strong east to southeast winds with speeds of 20 to 25knots and upto 30 knots through the passages. Rough seas, very rough through the passages. Moderate southeast swells.
