The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations has clarified that any worker employed on the gazetted public holiday this Saturday will be required to be paid double pay.

This was relayed by the assistant director labour standard service, Mr Atish Kumar who said the ministry had received a lot of queries from business houses and workers in terms of employment and payment on the upcoming public holiday.

“We would like to clarify in terms on the Employment Regulations Promulgations, Section (67) which talks about the public holiday pay for workers,” Mr Kumar said.

“If a worker is employed this Saturday – 10th October, 2015, the gazetted public holiday, then the worker is entitled to double pay.”

Mr Kumar said if the worker does not come to work on Saturday then they will get a single public holiday pay.

“The worker must be at work a day before and after the public holiday and if they are unable to do so then they must provide a valid reason or a medical certificate,” he said.

Mr Kumar adds Fiji Day is celebrated amongst all across Fiji therefore those employers who are operating on this day are required to remunerate their workers accordingly.
