The Fijian Government has secured hosting rights for the 2016 Commonwealth Telecommunications Authority (CTO) Forum and Council meeting after a successful bid at the 2015 CTO Forum and Council Meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Fijian delegation, comprised of Director for Communications Shivnesh Prasad and Senior Legal Officer of the Attorney-General’s Chambers Tupoutua’h Baravilala, attended the high-level meeting with more than 30 other countries, various development partners and other NGOs.
Fiji was also unanimously elected as Second Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of the CTO Council. Other elected members include Nigeria as Committee Chair and Trinidad and Tobago as First Vice Chair.
“The CTO Council is the highest decision making body in the CTO. For Fiji to assume the position of Second Vice Chair will significantly enhance Fiji’s influence and importance,” said Attorney General and Minister for Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Fiji also recently executed an agreement with the CTO to formulate Fiji’s cyber security strategy.
“Fiji’s cyber security strategy will not only benefit Fijians by keeping our country as secure as possible, it also benefits other Pacific Island countries by giving them a model framework off which to base their own strategies. This will enable the Pacific region to increase our connectivity and decrease the digital divides that exist between us,” said AG.
