The Nadi Sports and Social Club will play host to The Handy Finance Fiji National Sailing Record Fun Day on Sunday 20th September from 2 pm.
Nadi Speedster Andrew Redfern, set Fiji’s first ever sailing record when he hit a blistering speed of 41 knots (almost 80km/hr) at the Luderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia last year.
Redfern who is going back again this year in an attempt to break his own record said, “Although I have been windsurfing for many years, last year was my first attempt at this particular kind of sailing. I learnt so much from participating that I am confident I can use my new found knowledge and experience to push the record further”.
The Luderitz Speed Canal is a purpose built channel in the Namibian desert that takes advantage of the strong thermal desert winds but provides sailors with the smooth water that they need to sail fast.
“Luderitz has become THE place to go to set records”, added Redfern “having produced some 12 World and 75 National Records since its inception in 2007”.
“The purpose of the “Fun Day” he continued, “is to promote the sport in Fiji and give kids an opportunity to see what windsurfing and kite surfing are about. I am hoping with this and other free clinics I will be conducting around the country will help to inspire some champions of the future”.
“My participation last year created huge interest amongst the pro sailors and the international press, with all expressing a desire to visit Fiji. We live in a watersports paradise”, added Redfern, “and part my reason for taking part is to help put Fiji on the map in the sailing world as well as encourage people to come see Fiji for themselves”.
The event kicks off at 2pm and includes beer, wines, juice, hot dogs, burgers, pizza, DJ and Bouncy Castle.
Tickets which cost $20 are available on the door. KIDS ARE FREE (with a paying adult)
