The visit by the United Arad Emirates (UAE) Foreign Minister to Fiji marks a new chapter in strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two nations.This is the second visit of a high level minister from the UAE to Fiji since formal diplomatic relation was established in March 2010.The UAE Minister for Foreign Affairs, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan first came to Fiji in 2010.
The meeting on Wednesday February 18, between His Highness and Fiji’s Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola discussed areas of interest and mutual benefits between the two countries.His Highness also congratulated Fiji on the successful elections and wished the Government of Fiji the best in building a better Fiji for all her people.Fiji also acknowledges the UAE’s leading role in the climate change and renewable energy agenda.
Minister Kubuabola said, “we appreciate the UAE’s strong support of the sustainable development through the harnessing of existing renewable energy sources and Fiji wishes to continue collaborating with the UAE’s expert experience and technical know-how in assisting Fiji to combat the effects of climate change.”
In regards to terrorism and extremism in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Region, Fiji continues to support the UAE with peacekeeping activities and peace building initiatives.The UAE looks forward to strengthening trade and economic relations with Fiji.
“We want to create a strong base for investment in Fiji knowing the great opportunities this friendly island poses,” His Highness stated.
Discussions also centered on finalizing a number of pending MOUs and MOAs with the hopes of successful coordination in the future.Fiji and the UAE intend to strengthen cooperation in areas like infrastructure development, defence cooperation, capacity building, renewable energy and climate change.An ally such as the UAE is beneficial, especially with regards to the welfare and safety of our Fijian Peacekeepers and nationals who are living and working in the region.
Fiji and the UAE already share commonalities with regards to foreign policy such as non-interference in internal affairs and peaceful dispute resolution which brings the two countries together.
The meeting ended with His Highness Sheikh Abdulla Al Nahyan’s courtesy call visits to the Prime Minister Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama and the Attorney General Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
