THE effectiveness of aid depends on proper targeting of assistance and the good management of the aid resources, says the Ministry of Finance permanent secretary Filimone Waqabaca.

Speaking at the Fiji-Japan Official Development Assistance Development Cooperation Policy Consultation this morning, Mr Waqabaca said Japan had been a significant donor in Fiji’s economic and social sectors.

The Deputy Director-General of International Cooperation Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ken Okaniwa and his team were given a clear picture of Fiji’s developments over the last few years and where it is headed in the future.

“Japan has provided funds for capital works, technical experts and volunteers and has also facilitated long and short term training in Japan for many Fiji nationals,” Mr Waqabaca said.

He said Japan’s ODA programme through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) continues to provide valuable assistance through technical training, human resources and in other areas.

Mr Okinawa said the presentations by the Ministry of Finance has helped him understand the situation better and will influence the areas of assistance that will be channelled through to Fiji.
