Primary and secondary school heads met this week with senior executives of the Ministry of Education to discuss issues affecting the education sector. The workshop on ‘Reforms Awareness’ has been organised by the ministry in partnership with the Fiji Principals Association and the Fiji Head Teachers Association.

Opened by the Minister for Education Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy, the workshop also gave school heads the opportunity to put to the ministry issues they face in their respective institutions.

“We have a vision and the ministry is working towards ensuring the education sector contributes positively to the nation by producing high achievers,” he said.

“This is one of the reasons we are implementing new policies to achieve this.”

The ministry has already begun implementation of the new initiatives and programmes which are specifically designed to promote an inclusive and innovative education system.

“We need to be output oriented and not input oriented,” Hon. Reddy added.
He also cleared the air on the need to remove scaling of marks and provided statistics for the better understanding of move by Government.

Hon. Dr Reddy also noted that despite government’s intake of more than 600 graduate teachers, there still remains teacher shortage in some schools.

“We are looking at that issue and we will ensure that teacher shortages are addressed.”

Similar workshops are also scheduled for the Central/Eastern and Northern divisions.
