MINISTRY UPGRADES, BUILD NEW GROUNDS
The Ministry of Youth and Sports last week began the upgrade of the Lokia playground and started earthworks for a new ground at Waikete village in Nakelo.
The Honourable Minister for Youth and Sports Mr Laisenia Tuitubou visited Lokia and said; “The ministry planned for the construction of several grounds around Fiji this year, but was stalled due to some unforeseen circumstances.”
“It doesn’t deter us from assisting those requesting for similar assistance especially in the Central division,” said Hon. Tuitubou.
“The ministry is upgrading the Lokia grounds as it the biggest ground for villages and young people in this part of the Rewa delta and will construct a new playground in Waikete, Nakelo.”
Senior Sports Officer Sitiveni Rokoro said that the works carried out at the Lokia grounds would be completed before Christmas while the Waikete ground will be ready early 2015.
“The ministry is just digging the drains and providing some top soil for the Lokia grounds,” said Rokoro. “For Waikete, we are constructing a new playground altogether.”
The size according to Senior Sports Officer Rokoro is 120 metres by 70 metres and the village youths can look forward to utilising their playground in the future for small tournaments and sporting activities. “The onus is now on the youths of these villages to maintain their playgrounds,” said Mr Rokoro.
Hon. Tuitubou reiterated that Government has allocated $200,000 in the 2015 Budget the development of rural playing fields.
Waikete Youth Club president Eroni Kurumaca said; “We are really grateful for this assistance and the youths can’t wait to enjoy their new playground when it is completed.”
This will also entice the youth to develop their sporting abilities and most importantly attract the rural dwellers to participate in some form of physical activity,” said Kurumaca.
Earthworks on the new Waikete playground began last Tuesday on (December 9).

TRAINING CAMP SITE TO STRENGTHEN FIJI’S PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS
The Republic of Fiji Military Forces Black Rock Camp in Nadi is critical to Fiji’s national security and is also a major step towards fulfilling the nation’s peacekeeping duties.
Those were the words of the Hon. Minister for Defence Captain Timoci Lesi Natuva who made his first visit to Camp Black Rock in Votualevu, Nadi since his appointment as Defence Minister this year. He commended the works carried out to develop the camp and highlighted its role in strengthening Fiji’s peacekeeping operations.
“Camp Black Rock has been opened as a training ground for our soldiers for peacekeeping assignments so it is an integral part of our commitments towards international peace,” he said.
“It is also very important to our national security as it is located close to the Nadi international airport.”
Speaking to personnel at Camp Black Rock, the Minister reminded them that 2015 would be a very challenging year and directed senior officers to help maintain physical fitness levels as there could be new assignments.
“You are aware that some of our personnel will move to Lebanon – now the last time Fijians were in Lebanon under UNIFIL was in 2004 and this new move is testimony to our records in international peacekeeping,” the Minister said.
“We must continue to ensure that every Fijian leave behind a legacy during their missions in the lives of the vulnerable citizens of that country where ever we serve in.”
Government has also provided the RFMF an allocation in the 2015 budget to improve facilities at the centre.
Apart from training soldiers, Camp Black Rock also is a base for Fiji’s disaster operations in the western division.

FIJIAN STUDENTS COMPLETE TRAINING ON FISHERIES HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
Jakarta, Dec 17- Two Fijian students have this week successfully completed a two and half months training on Fisheries Human Resources Management in Indonesia.
Waisea Vusonitokalau and Marama Naigulevu received their certificates during their graduation ceremony at the Training Centre in Waiheru, Ambon in Maluku on December 15 2014.
The training was a result of the visit by the Melanesian Spearhead Group Foreign Ministers’ to Indonesia in January this year.
During the visit, the center based in eastern Indonesia was identified as a possible implementing agency for joint collaboration amongst MSG Countries and Indonesia.
Training and exchange of students in the fisheries sector were part of the agreed outcomes of the visit, which had resulted in the seven participants coming over to Indonesia to be part of the Training.
Four participants from the Solomon Islands and one from Vanuatu were also part of the group that represented MSG countries at the center.
The course comprised of Small Engine Repair, Aquaculture, Fisheries Product Processing and Fisheries Human Resources Management.
The participants thoroughly enjoyed their experience during their short stint at the center and hoped to put what they’ve learnt into practice upon their return.
They expressed their gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the training center for facilitating the course.
