Thursday 20th November – The Rotuma Athletics team received a major boost as they were presented with brand new competition uniform by Digicel Fiji today, on the eve of the two-day Central/Eastern FMF Chow Games to be held at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.
Digicel Fiji’s Commercial Director, Mr. Andrew Skelton welcomed the 16-member team to Suva and presented new competition vests and shorts to them at the Digicel headquarters in Suva.
“We are happy to sponsor our friends from Rotuma for the games,” said Skelton.
“I welcome you to the capital city and I know you all must be tired after a long boat trip over the last couple of days. Digicel Fiji sponsored the team when you took part in the games for the first time last year and we are pleased to extend our support again for this year. I would like to wish you all the best on behalf of Digicel Fiji, go out there and do your best and represent your beautiful island proudly.”
“Digicel Fiji is the only network available on Rotuma Island and we are committed to developing the network reach there. Our technicians are on the island today upgrading the network to 3G+ so Rotuma will soon enjoy superfast internet access just like the rest of the country.”
Rotuma Athletics team manager, Ms Louisa Robin was happy to receive the sponsorship from Digicel for the second year in a row.
“We are happy to get the sponsorship from Digicel Fiji and we would like to assure you that we will aim to do our best at the two-day games,” said Robin.
The 16-member Rotuma Athletics team will be among some 1,200 athletes battling it out for honours in Suva. The team from the islands is made up of the best athletes from four schools.
Robin says providing exposure and competition awareness will be the main aim while participating at the games and is hoping for some medals in sprint events. They won 7 medals, 1 gold, 3 silvers and 3 bronze last year. Last year’s lone gold medalist, Belinda Erasito who won the under-12 400 metres title is back to spearhead the island teams campaign.
The Rotuma contingent arrived in Suva earlier this morning and will spend another two weeks in Suva after the games before returning home.
Rotuma is the farthest travelling team to the games, it took them two days to travel by boat to reach Suva.
The FMF Chow Games will be held tomorrow and Saturday in Suva.
