Feminist Legal Theory, Human Rights Conventions and different laws that deal with violence against women girls and children, from the different countries represented at the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre’s regional police training will be thoroughly discussed as the program resumes at the Hexagon Hotel in Nadi today.
The ten different countries represented are Kiribati, Tuvalu, Palau, Nauru, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, PNG, Vanuatu and Fiji and is being sponsored by the Australian Federal Police.
FWCC Coordinator Shamima Ali says there has been a lot of discussions and debates with a lot of positive feedback from the 23 participants.
This week she says, FWCC’s legal team who have already studied the different laws from the different countries will compare these laws and include participants in discussions to identify best practice when dealing with crimes against women, girls and children.
The training is in line with Pacific governments and development agencies commitment to developing prevention and response strategies towards the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.
This training also aims to sensitize regional police officers to develop better responses towards reports of violence against women and girls and to eliminate existing attitudes, often based on cultural and religious beliefs which then creates barriers in women getting justice.
The training is from 29 September to 9 October.
The media is also invited to the graduation ceremony on the evening of Thursday 9 October.
