In the last 24 hours, two people have lost their lives on the road due to speeding and alcohol.

Yesterday morning at around 06.30am, a 56 year old driver was driving a 10 wheeler truck loaded with Bauxite along Vuninoko Road, Nabouwalu, Labasa. While proceeding towards Navutu Road, the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle tumbled; the driver was thrown out and died at the scene.

In a separate incident early this morning at around 03.00 am, a  I-Taukei male driver of a vehicle LR 2669 while heading towards the Western Division hit a sign board and veered off the road at Nakorovou, Navua.

The said vehicle then tumbled down a bridge.

The man who was heavily smelt of liquor died instantly and was removed from his vehicle by residents of the area.

Fiji Police Force Director of Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mahesh Mishra and these two accidents occurred due to speeding and alcohol as a contributing factor.

“This sends out a clear message that some drivers tend to be ignorant and now two initial lives have been lost due to ignorance,” said SSP Mishra.

The Director Traffic said they will continue with their weekend operation this week where they will be conducting breathalyzer test and black spots coverage.

“We are pleading to all drivers to please adhere to all safety regulations in order to avoid further mishaps,” said SSP Mishra.
