NADI. May 21, 2014. A determined Isei Tokovou overcame a daunting points deficit in the final Trials event for the ASP Fiji Pro yesterday at Cloudbreak to take the coveted wildcard slot in the world professional tour event which begins June 1st off Nadi.
Waves ranged up to 2 meters in sunny, & slightly windy side-offshore conditions at Fiji’s famed Cloudbreak. The early lead in the final between three of Fiji’s top surfers went to the rampaging Ratu Aca Lalabalavu who fought his way to two high scoring waves by the half way mark in the 30 minute final between he, Isei, and Inia Nakalevu.
At this stage Isei was stuck in third place with a string of incomplete rides. However, Isei’s patience in sitting at the top off the peak waiting for the larger set waves paid off when at the 17 minute mark a gift wave loomed which he was able to get to work on and notch up the second highest scoring wave of the final. In the building swell a succession of larger waves continued to roll through and from this point on he traded high scores with Lalabalavu and eventually came out ahead by a mere 15.4 to 15.2 points.
