Is Candy Spelling reigniting her family feud with daughter Tori Spelling?
In her new memoir Candy at Last, the 68-year-old doesn’t shy away from writing about her and Tori’s strained relationship, which has had many ups and downs over the years.
“I am by no means saying that I am the perfect mother now or I didn’t make mistakes when my children were growing up. In therapy I learned that I was passive-aggressive and that I also had poor communication skills,” Candy writes in the book.
“Having said that, I also believe that there comes a time when you have to stop blaming your parents. I have learned from my own journey that at some point you have to take responsibility for your own actions and attitudes.”
While Candy elaborately details the very close relationship she has with her son Randy Spelling, Candy reveals she’ll go long periods of time without hearing from Tori. “During the year we were estranged, it was excruciating not hearing from Tori and not being able to get ahold of her,” she writes, adding that the first time she met Dean McDermott was at the funeral of her late husband Aaron Spelling. “It was very uncomfortable,” Candy recounts.
“Tori and I are a work in progress and probably always will be,” Candy explains. “I notice that the more my self-esteem expands, the less patience I have for the pursuit cycle she creates when she shuts me out. We have a pattern, and until we can break it hand-in-hand, this is going to be the little dance she and I do together.”
Candy also hints that family money issues are part of the reason why Tori has ill feelings towards her.
“My husband and I handed everything to our children, only later to realize that pushing up your shirtsleeves and digging in your heels is character building,”
Candy writes. “I think the best way to explain my perspective is to quote George Clooney’s character, Matt King, inThe Descendants. At the beginning of the movie, Matt explains his family’s intergenerational wealth. Matt says that his father wanted him to have ‘enough money to do something but not enough to do nothing.’ That pretty much sums up how I feel.”
Earlier this week, Candy admitted to watching her daughter’s reality show True Tori, which chronicles Dean’s affair and their strained marriage. “As a mom, you don’t wanna see your children hurt in any way, and I have to say that it’s painful for me to watch it,” Candy admitted.
