Honiara, 01 May 2014 – A group of big-hearted Fijians living and working in the Solomon Islands have extended the hand of friendship to the people of Honiara in their time of need.
The ‘Friends of Fiji’ is made up of expatriate Fijians, all of whom attended prominent boarding schools in their home country. These include Queen Victoria School QVS), Marist Brothers High School (MBHS), Levuka Public School (LPS) and Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) with the group being led by the President of the RKS Old Boys’ Honiara branch, Mr Sevuloni Valenitabua.
The group were shocked when they discovered many people in and around Honiara were still in need of much needed food supplies following the recent natural disasters and decided to take prompt action.
As a result they have successfully collected a large amount of food, mainly sacks of rice, which is now being distributed to the local people.
“We wanted to do something to further to assist with the national effort of rehabilitation and it was wonderful to see that the more fortunate people amongst us were very happy to be of help those less fortunate,” Mr Valenitabua said.
“This may only represent a small donation but in the bigger scheme of things we know it will help some of our brothers and sisters and their families and that can only be a good thing.”
‘Friends of Fiji’ member Jo Tuamoto, now in Honiara where he is heading up the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, said the group was very proactive and showed its support to help others in many ways.
“This action was very right and timely for those people of the Solomon Islands who are most vulnerable and need assistance at a critical time,” he said.
