1 NATIONAL CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO CONTROL DENGUE FEVER
The Fijian Government is embarking on a massive health cleanup campaign to combat the outbreak of dengue fever in the country.
This national campaign is spearheaded through the Ministry of Health and has so far seen the commitment by various organisations within the private sector.
The general public is encouraged to support the efforts of government in the National cleanup campaign and this will continue for the next consecutive four (4) weeks.
At a press conference held today to mark the launch of this campaign, the Ministry’s National Adviser for Communicable Diseases Dr Mike Kama highlighted the importance of clean surroundings to avoid dengue fever.
“Each individual or household needs to take this initiative in cleaning up their own backyards and to dispose any materials that may attract mosquitoes to breed,” Dr Kama said.
He pointed out that those with symptoms of dengue fever need to present themselves to the nearest medical facility.
“We need to get of the habit of taking paracetamol if they have body ache, high fever so it would be better to visit their nearest health centres for a check-up,” Dr Kama said.
There are 9825 confirmed cases of dengue fever and the highest numbers are presented in the central division. The Ministry said that there are now eight (8) confirmed deaths related to dengue fever.

2 FIJI AND INDONESIA SENIOR OFFICIALS HOLD TALKS
Strengthening Fiji’s own defence and border facilities topped talks this week between Fiji’s Defence Ministry and a visiting delegation from the Republic of Indonesia.
The Ministry of Defence, National Security and Immigration met with the visiting Indonesian delegation to look at ways of boosting the Ministry’s services in areas of combating transitional crimes at our borders and capacity building including training within the Fiji Police force. The Ministry would also like to engage on lessons learnt and best practices through information exchange on areas of policing, military and Boarder control from the Indonesian Government considering their diverse population and geographical spread.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Osea Cawaru pointed out that the meeting was a follow up to a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2011 by the Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration for the Fiji Police Force and the Indonesian Police.
“We discussed how the Fiji Police can work with the Indonesian police on information sharing, exchange community policing programs, cyber crime, narcotic and drugs bureau and encountering terrorism at our borders,” Mr Cawaru said.
“Profiling and surveillance programs, work attachments for both countries and how the two countries can share experiences and assistance on areas like document examination techniques including document examination laboratory with training and visa reciprocal arrangements are other new areas that we are requesting,” the Permanent Secretary said.
Mr Cawaru said today’s meeting was indicative of the Indonesian government’s support towards up-skilling the Fiji Police Force and Immigration in ensuring that national security is maintained.

3 LABASA YOUTH GRADUATE FROM BEAUTY THERAPY TRAINING
13 participants from the Labasa Beauty Therapy Training Certificate under the Ministry of Youth and Sports graduated at the Ministry’s Office at the Ro Qomate House in Labasa yesterday.
“Beauty therapy is my talent and I am thankful to the Ministry for giving me this chance”, said 26 year old Kelepi Ratiri of Bua who was also the only male participant at the training.
He said there were many things that they didn’t know about beauty therapy and its medicines and the tools.
“I now have a glimpse of my future and hope to open my own business.”
Gurmeet Kaur,26, who was also one of the participants said the training gave them an opportunity to at least gain a certificate and further their career.
“We knew the basics of beauty therapy but we needed the qualifications.”
Training Instructor TJ Loloma said the productive training was also about empowering the youths.
“It was an honor, as the first lot graduated in 2012, this is the fourth batch and it’s all about reaching out to the young people and getting them prepared for the future.”
Meanwhile; the Ministry’s Acting Principal Youth Officer for Research Policy Planning and Information Unit Phiip Hereniko said government through the Ministry is committed to ensure that all young people are provided adequate training opportunities.

4 YOUTH GRADUATE FROM NAQERE TRAINING
Today saw the presentation certificates for Small Engine Repair Training to 13 young Fijians at the Naqere Training Centre in Savusavu.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports Acting Principal Youth Officer for Research, Policy, Planning and Information Unit Philip Hereniko officiated at the event and informed the graduates that nothing in life comes easy.
“As you exit Naqere, go out and continue to learn and expand your horizons.”
Participant Asel Daniel, 20 said that after receiving his certificate today, he now has more employment opportunities. He highlighted that this training can allow him to teach those in his community on the training he received.
“It was hard being away from home in the first two days but now it’s hard to live this learning environment and these group of boys whom we have built a bond.”
Meanwhile; also graduating from Naqere were 12 participants under the Basic Beauty Care/ Therapy Training.
Sarojni Chand a mother of two said the six weeks training was an eye opener for her and she has decided to open her own beauty care business from her home in Naqqere.
“I was always eager to learn and now I have been awarded a certificate to further my dreams, thanks to the Ministry.”
