The Fijian National Women’s Rugby Sevens team the Fijiana have today confirmed their participation in the 2014 Fitness First Central Coast Sevens International Rugby Festival.
Fijiana current champions of Fiji’s Coral Coast Sevens will contest their first Central Coast tournament over 25th and 26th October and are expected to be one of the favorites to take out the prestigious event regarded as the premier women’s tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.
The women’s Kinesio Cup will be a hotly contested field with Fijiana taking on the best sevens sides from around Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA.
Women’s Rugby Sevens is the fastest growing team sport in the world as the game heads towards featuring at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with the Fitness First Central Coast Sevens providing premier international level competition and significant development opportunities. The tournament also offers the highest prize money for women’s rugby in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tournament Director Craig Morgan said “we are excited to have Fijiana confirmed for the tournament, the team are expected to certainly challenge for the title and joining teams from around Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA further reinforces the reputation and international strength of the tournament as the premier women’s sevens event in the Southern Hemisphere”.
The Fitness First Central Coast Sevens is utilized by the Australian Rugby Union as a talent identification tournament with the National High Performance Unit and National Coach former Dual International Michael O’Connor often in attendance seeking to unearth talented individuals taking them into the National Program and onto the world-series. Central Coast tournament organisers are hoping that future Rugby Sevens Olympians will be identified at the event in October.
Alongside the premier women’s event the men’s tournament will also feature a high profile field of teams from around the world with tournament organisers indicating the men’s tournament will feature the strongest field of teams in the events history with teams currently being confirmed and soon to be announced.
