With the long term objective to strengthen Fiji’s tourism industry by investing in its people, the resort is one of the only tourism operators in Fiji to partner with local education institutions for paid apprenticeships.

“We want to provide our interns with as much hands on experience as possible to give them an opportunity to apply the theory they’ve learnt in the classroom to real-world situations,” said Mr. Jacob Pau’u, Training Manager at the resort.

The internship program, now in its 2nd year has accepted 16 students from around the country since its inception and has this year expanded its reach to welcome regional students from around the country since its inception and has this year expanded its reach to welcome regional students from around the Pacific.

To be accepted into the program, students must be recognised as high potential candidates by their institution, and undergo a rigorous series of interviews at the annual USP Careers Fair, which was held at InterContinental Fiji in September last year.

“The initiative has been a great success thus far,” said Greg Cornwall, Coordinator of the Hotel Management Programme at the School of Tourism & Hospitality Managements in the University of the South Pacific.  “Practical experience is an essential skill in an increasingly competitive industry and it’s wonderful to see local businesses investing in its people, and consequently the future of the industry.”
