Fijian representative, Maciu Gauna, has come heart-breakingly short of making a century for his Australian club, Wests Illawarra, in the Cricket Illawarra competition last weekend.
Maciu was dismissed for 99, in an innings which included nine fours and two sixes. The Fijian was truly the shining light in his side’s six-wicket loss to the team from the Northern Districts, as he also took a wicket with the ball, finishing with bowling figures of 1-22 off seven overs.
Fellow Fijian, Viliame Yabaki, had an easier weekend on the field, with his team, the Boroondara Cobras recording a massive ten-wicket win against Wyclif in Melbourne’s Eastern Cricket Association’s competition. Batting first, Wyclif were bowled out for 107 in just 32.2 overs, which the Cobras easily chased down, without the loss of a wicket, in a mere 18 overs. Although Vili didn’t get a chance to bat, he made his presence felt in the field, taking a catch and making a run out.
Even more Fijian’s will be in action for their clubs next weekend, as the Australian domestic season draws to a close. Maciu’s side, Wests Illawarra, will face Dapto away, whilst Vili’s side, Boroondara, will play day one of a two-day game against Clifton Hill at Ramsden Street Reserve. Over in Margaret River Sekove Ravoka’s team, Cowaramup, play Dunsborough at home in the Busselton Margaret River Cricket Association’s competition, whilst in Adelaide, Alicia Dean’s side, Port Adelaide, will face West Torrens away from home in the South Australian Women’s Grade Cricket competition.
