Mervyn Nabuka will depart for Australia on Saturday, after being selected to umpire at Cricket Australia’s Imparja Cup.
Held in Central Australia’s Alice Springs, the Imparja Cup is Australia’s National Indigenous cricket tournament, held annually for elite and recreational, male and female cricket teams, for players of Indigenous heritage. 2014 will mark the 21st annual running of the event, from which Australia’s Indigenous Under-23 Development Team will be named.
Mervyn, who hails from Nakavu, is the first Fijian to be selected to umpire at such an event, as a part of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) East-Asia Pacific (EAP) Region’s Umpire Scholarship Program. He will be one of two umpires from the EAP region officiating at the event.
The tournament will be held at international-standard grounds, including Traegar Park, where the visiting English team recently played a tour match. The Imparja Cup will run from February 9 to 15, with Mervyn returning to Fiji on the 17th.
