Staff and students at the Fiji National University’s Lautoka campus carried out a clean up campaign on Saturday, February 1st.
This clean up campaign came about following consultation with the university Vice Chancellor and the College Deans on the rise of dengue cases that have been reported in the media.
Dean of the College Humanities and Education Doctor Eci Nabalarua said because the Lautoka campus has a big hostel population, this clean up needed to be done.
She said dengue in the Central Division is on the rise and very high, the Raiwai campus was also mobilizing itself to carry out this activity as well.
“Good to also get our staff to be involved in this community exercise,” she said.
Staff and residential students on campus under the guidance of the School of Education head Hem Chand, carried out its first clean up campaign for the year at the Lautoka campus.
Staff and students moved around the campus picking up rubbish esp any kind of containers or shells that were likely to collect water and become breeding places for the dengue mosquito.
Mr Chand said this was an opportune time to carry out the clean up campaign following the heavy rains and flooding the western division had recently experienced.
He said with natural disasters such as flooding major water and air borne diseases usually followed and FNU was doing it bit in playing in preventing such outbreaks from happening at any of its major campuses or centres.
As much as possible staff and students were involved in this moving through the campus right through to the fenced boundary.
The staff and students were divided into teams and were provided with gloves and the rubbish bags.
