National Fire Authority (NFA) welcomed back four of its officers last week who returned from Japan after undergoing three months training in firefighting and rescue.
Officer in Charge for Tavua Fire Station, Mohammed Imran and Sub-Officer, Taveuni Fire Station, Viliame Lomaloma attended the Firefighting Technique course at the Kitakyushu Fire Department.
The two officers learnt advance level of firefighting techniques to deal with all kinds of major fires which included firefighting in high rise building, bush fires and how to put out fires in aeroplanes, ship and motor vehicle fires.
Two other officers, Sub-Officer, Amena Wainibu and Senior Firefighter, Epenisi Rigamoto attended the Rescue Techniques training for three months at Japan’s Osaka Fire Department.
The three months training course was on rescue techniques. The two officers underwent training in rescue and disaster management.
NFA CEO John O’Connor said the training attended by our firefighters in Japan are very highly specialised training in firefighting and rescue techniques.
“The expertise gained by these firefighters in Japan strengthens NFA’s firefighting, rescue techniques and disaster management capabilities”, Mr O’Connor said.
“Such training opportunities upskills our firefighters in firefighting and emergency management services and we are fortunate for such high level training opportunities provided by Japan’s International Corporation Agency (JICA).
The NFA CEO highlighted that as NFA benchmark its services to international fire services, such training opportunities and the upskilling of our firefighters is an important part of NFA’s training development and plans to uplift the standard of its service deliveries.
The officers now have acquired the skills and competency in these specialised areas. They have presented their reports to Management and Management intends to implement their recommendations to ensure the enhancement of our capacity to provide such specialised skills training. NFA is looking at purchasing the relevant specialised equipment to allow these officers to conduct similar training to all the other officers of NFA.
NFA also thanked JICA for their sponsorship in facilitating such training opportunities.
