Government has increased its social welfare child protection allowance per child to ensure that quality care and protection are provided to children in Fiji.
The Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni said the Ministry has increased its ‘Child Protection’ allowance from $60 to $100 per child per month because the previous allowance was not adequate in relation to responsibilities of child care.
“In line with the increasing costs of living in Fiji, the allowances have increased from $60 per child per month, to $100 per month per child, specifically for children in institutional residential homes,” Dr Luveni said.
“Apart from education assistance, Government continues to implement new laws that will see children given all the facilities they need to help them develop as better citizens.
“Government puts a lot of emphasis on children’s welfare and greater need for their wellbeing,” she added.
The Social Welfare Ministry administers cash grants to children in residential care institutions to ensure financial support is provided by the State.
The Ministry currently provides allowances for children houses in nine residential institutions around Fiji.
