The BSP sponsored Fiji Outrigger Business House regatta is set to get underway this Saturday with over 300 players and spectators converging for the final event at the USP foreshore.
“We are delighted to host the event for the seventh year running and it’s truly encouraging to witness the interest grow in this unique sport,” said Fiji Outrigger President, Paul Yaqona.
“The event has grown from strength to strength through support of our major sponsors BSP and associate sponsors, University of the South Pacific, Total, Paradise Beverages, Vodafone and to all the business house teams who have registered.”
Business competition will shift venue this Saturday from the office or consumer markets and move out to open water and sea breeze.
“The location may be different but the competition is just as aggressive in a friendly set up when we see these business representatives battle it out for supremacy on the water,” Yaqona mentioned.
At the first regatta held on 16th of May, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community SPC Warriors team was victorious in the Cup Final recording a time of 1 minute and 11 seconds over a 250m distance. In second place were Pacific
Building Solutions and in third place Clay Energy. There was also fierce competition in the Plate Final, again won by SPC, this time, the SPC Sheer team and in Bowl final won by Total team WAT.
Although it may be a minority sport in Fiji, outrigger canoeing is deeply rooted in the culture of the Pacific Island Countries. Fiji Outrigger is proud to continue this cultural tradition by supporting individual clubs through sponsorship, fundraising activities and raising awareness about this unique Pacific sport to youth, adults and communities throughout Fiji.
For business houses it is a chance to have some fun on the water, while also engaging in a valuable team building activity which also promotes health and fitness.
“We invite the general public to come out and join us this Saturday for a fun day for the family and cheer on your favourite business house,” said Yaqona.
The BSP Fiji Business House regatta begins at 9am this Saturday at the USP Laucala Campus foreshore.
