Baby’s first Christmas! Kate Middleton and Prince William got their holiday celebrations started early with a visit to Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II‘s annual Christmas lunch on Wednesday, Dec. 18. This year’s event was especially festive for the royal family, as it’s the first to include Prince George.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the lunch at 1:15 p.m., about 15 minutes later than most other guests. They were photographed in their car — Prince William behind the wheel and Middleton beside him in the passenger seat — as they drove onto the Palace grounds with their 5-month-old son.
The Duke, 31, dressed up for the occasion in a navy suit with a blue Oxford shirt and matching tie. His wife, also 31, wore a red coat.
Other royals in attendance included Prince William’s father, Prince Charles; his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; Prince Edward; Princess Beatrice; Katharine, Duchess of Kent; Viscount Linley; and, of course, Queen Elizabeth II.
The mid-December pre-Christmas lunch is one of the Queen’s many holiday traditions. She hosts it at Buckingham Palace every year before leaving for Sandringham Estate, where she and the royal family spend Christmas Day.
